KENNY GARRETT INTERVIEW
Summum Concert Series
In collaboration with Summum Concert Series, we had the privilege of having a brief chat with the renowned Kenny Garrett.
In a brief conversation, we touch on interesting topics: Garrett’s upcoming European tour and his gig in Madrid, the ideas and purpose behind his music, and the music that has been influencing him lately.
We hope you can enjoy!!!!
In&OutJazz: Tell us, man, how are you? Are you looking forward to coming to Madrid again under this exciting program by Summum?
Kenny Garrett: I’m good. Thanks for asking. I always appreciate an opportunity to perform in Madrid.
We’ve been blessed by your two latest releases. Sounds from the Ancestors and Who Killed AI? We’re talking about two very different projects! What project are you bringing to Madrid?
I’ll be performing with my Sounds From The Ancestors band and we hope that the audience will have a great time.
How did your last album come about? What’s the composition process like in order to come up with that masterpiece?
I’m always looking for different ideas and musicians to collaborate with on a special project. Svoy was living 2 minutes away from me. He came by my house one day with his computer and played me a track. I listened to the track and immediately took out my saxophone and created a melody and played a solo on the track. That was the beginning. The composition was named later as the music came together.
Sounds awesome!!! What do you care for most when playing live? What’s the purpose behind your music? Are you pursuing anything in particular when you compose/improvise/play/perform?
I take the audience on a journey with us. The purpose behind the music is to lift the spirits of people. We are trying to reach the highest level, what I call the upper room.
Interesting, man. What music are you listening to these days? What do you draw inspiration from? It can also be a non-musical thing!
I’m listening to Maestro Marcel Mule, he is the father of the classical saxophone. Apart from that, I’d sat my inspiration comes from loads of different life experiences.
Alright, so that was all man. Thanks a lot for tuning in!!! That was Kenny Garrett y’all!!! We’ll be able to see him life at Teatro San Pol on march 24th!!!! Pull up everybody, it’ll be a great show for sure!!!! Thanks again Kenny, have a great day!!!
Thank you guys, peace!!!
