The Space Around the Sound Resounds by Firelife Trio is an ambitious, live-recorded and supremely fiery testament to the power of instantaneous creation. Documented at the Ochre House Theater in Dallas, TX, the record strips away all of the fail-safes of studio polish, pre-composed themes or contingency plans. What remains is a visceral and demanding exploration of space and tension that asks for total presence from both the performers and the listener.
From the very outset of the first piece in their set “Scampering Underfoot, Radiant”, the band rejects any notion of standard harmonic safety. Danny Kamins deploys sharp, microtonal runs on his saxophones that pierce the lingering silence like serrated glass, carving out shapes of raw space within the room’s acoustics. Double-bassist Aaron Gonzalez eschews traditional basslines, instead responding with a primally-charged bowed assault on his double bass that coats the uncoiling chaos in a dark, resonant drone. What The Space Around the Sound Resounds displays is a most enticing paradox, one that makes all the best free form art – music that feels utterly untethered from earth, and yet is structurally locked into some shared, invisible geometry that only its players are privy to.
Stefan Gonzalez drives “Evaporating Obsolescence,” the center of the record with a brilliant, shape-shifting percussive vocabulary. Rather than maintaining a steady pulse, his drums mimic sequences of naturalist patterns—falling rocks, a brewing storm, and then, with confident abruptness, moments of almost breathless stillness. That sharply fluctuating contrast weaponized the physical air of the theater, turning it into something resembling a fourth instrument. Each cymbal strike’s decay exhales and persists, each snare hit leaves a swallowing silence.
By the time the trio usher in the final movement of “Wise Beyond Words” a purified state of sheer, collective telepathy and a prescient understanding of pivots and micro-cues is achieved in full, and the instruments become a single, pulsating organism, whose rhythms dissolve into textures, and whose melodies morph into sustained emotional outcries. With startling accuracy and a continued sense of unobstructed adventuring, Firelife Trio abandon all inhibition, deftly demonstrating what heightened discipline is required to truly let go.
Though this is by no means easy listening, to those willing to sit and patiently cut through the friction, The Space Around the Sound Resounds offers a wild gift – snared lightning that hits, over and over, before leaving the atmosphere it’s invaded in dense plumes of ambient decay.
